How you may use this

Use it as you wish. Adapt it, cut it, teach it. The personal stories are mine: either credit me for those or, better, tell your own. Most of the rest I gathered from other sources over the years, so I claim little original here. My one requirement — do not take this and teach it without further study.

The notes

How would you define wisdom?

I once asked a group of 5th graders and got these responses:

“Wisdom is being smarter than everyone else.” “Wisdom is knowing not to do stupid stuff.” “Wisdom is that little voice inside your head that tells you what to do when no one else knows what to do.”

So what do you think it is? Is wisdom being smarter, not being stupid, or is it something else?

King Solomon was famous for being wise. In the 3rd chapter of the book of Kings, we read of how God appeared to Solomon in a dream shortly after heʼd become king. God asked him, “What do you want? Ask, and it will be yours.”

Now, if God had made this offer to me, I would immeidately do this (rub hands together). “Letʼs see…pay off my debts, new cars for my wife and I, and $10 million in the bank. That should do it.” Most of us would say similar things, right?

Not Solomon. In 1 Kings 3.9 Solomon says, “Give me an understanding mind so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong.”

You may be well educated, you may make tons of money in the stock market or through your business, but unless you have the wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong, nothing else matters.

So tonight, do you have wisdom? Can you look into your life and see the need for Jesus? You see, a lot of us fear this reliance on God as like giving up our independence, and thatʼs exactly what it is. Giving it to God so we can live life free of sin.

If you have any spiritual needs this evening, if youʼd like to be baptized to wash you sins away and become a child of God, or if youʼd like to get back on the path and be restored, please come forward while we stand and sing.
