Indescribable

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, best known for her poetry in the 19th century both here in the US and in England, described her love for her husband Robert in beautiful terms. She wrote, “I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.” It is a beautiful description of love.

Paul took his own turn at describing love. How did he do? Even the casual student is impressed with Paul’s description of love in 1 Corinthian 13. In the opinion of many it is the greatest description of love that has ever been penned.

Readers love writers who can use words to describe things in beautiful ways.

As great a writer as Paul was, there was one thing he was unable to describe. There was one time when words failed him. When he wanted to tell us about the gift that God gave us in his own son and all he could say is, “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.” (2 Cor 9:15)

Do you see that word, “indescribable?”

Sometimes when someone does something amazing for you, you might thank them and just say, “I don’t know what to say. There aren’t enough words to tell you how thankful I am.” This is what Paul is doing. He is saying, that God’s gift of His Son is so great that it is not possible to tell you how great it is. It is indescribable!

Maybe when we see heaven we will get a better idea of this “indescribable gift.”
